REM Adaptation is a self-regulated process as the tree matures through its natural stages of development. Thus, seedlings do not suffer from the shock and exposure that often results in mortality when subjected directly to the harsh conditions that characterize high-energy and eroding shorelines. REM Adaptation causes changes to plant morphology and structure, which enables the establishment of reproductively mature mangroves in aberrant hydrology and non-native environments where natural regeneration cannot occur and conventional planting methods are ineffective.
